Traveling long distance for schooling in Nigeria

Posted by: Benjamin Onuorah

When it comes to schooling in Nigeria, I have studied in eight higher institutions in different locations of Nigeria, so I may be in a better position to advice you on this topic. I know as a young man or lady, you want to be as far away from your parents wahala as much as possible, yes! I can understand, and you have watched a lot of American movies and see how young people travel very long distance to school at the other end of their country.

Travelling is fun, experiencing what is happening at the other end the country is an enriching experience. But this is Nigeria, you must be conscious of the happening in your environment as much as possible, consider the traveling cost that you or your struggling parents will have to pay, consider the security situation in the country, consider the fear that your parents and love ones have to nurture each time you are traveling on the road, let alone the cost of housing; coming back home will be a burden each time you or your parents think about it. Now add this to your study stress and you can see how it can even affect your studies.

If you have a close by university, polytechnic or college of education offering that course you want to study, or something similar, kindly study there to reduce the burden on you and your family, you can easily go home to spend the weekends with them and restock for the following schooling weekdays or go to school from home if the distance is not that far from school. However, if your parents are very rich, and donโ€™t mind paying for flights or other costs that comes with leaving in Lagos and school in Abuja, Nsukka, Zaria or Port Harcourt, then you donโ€™t have to worry about this. Travelling far or near is more fun in Nigeria now if you have money. I believe that after you had graduated from that university in the state your parents reside you can still work and travel anywhere you want.
