Mike Omoighe




Michael Akhaine Osebhajimete Omoighe (born October 11, 1958 in Nigeria) lives in Lagos, Nigeria; he is a Nigerian painter, curator, art critic and teacher of art.

Mike Omoighe studied at Yaba College of Technology (1978, ND); at Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi (1980, HND); at the University of Lagos - UNILAG (1987, Certificate in Polytechnic Management (CPM) NBTE)) and at the University of Ibadan (1994, Master's degree in Visual Arts Communication) M.C.A.)

Mike Omoighe is one of Nigeria's most renowned artists whose modernist works have intrigued, and excited admirers and critics alike.

Described as being as complex as his art, he cannot be pinned down to one stylistic form. His ideas and his art are described as "an amalgamism of the spirit of the 20th/21st century Nigerian art".

His art, both drawings and paintings reflect a different perspective of Nigerian Art. His art also reflects his personal and national experiences, at once tragic and inspirational. He says " My dark dark night of soul made me grow".


Michael Omoighe's long and distinguished career began as a Multi-Dimensional Artist.

He is a Research Consultant on Visual Art literacy
development project in Africa and Art research Consultant to the Nigerian National Gallery
of Art, Ovuomaroro Gallery, IBBYP (International Board on Books for young people)
Nigerian Branch.. He also acts as a consultant to Shell overseas on proposed International mixed media workshops in Nigeria and to the Union Bank HQ. Plaza Marina Lagos.

He is a Curator, Researcher, Documenter, Art critic and editor art journal and has the honour of being listed in Who is Who in contemporary Nigerian Art at the Smithsonian, Museum of African Art publication and NICOLE GUES
I’art African Contemporain, Paris.

Michael who is currently a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Painting section in the Fine Art Department at his alma mata, the Yaba College of Technology, is married with children
