Duke Asidere
Duke Asidere is one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary artists; He was born in Lagos in 1961. His father was a sailor with the Elder Dempster company while his mother ran the household. The early influence of his mother would play a significant role in his art by frequent depiction of women as strong and powerful figures using strong strokes of rich colors also most of his works are also render with simplicity, element of surprise, irony and humour.
He studied Fine Art and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree first class in Painting in 1988 and also a Masters in Fine Art in 1990 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He taught fine art and art history at the Federal Auchi Polytechnic from 1990 to 1995 before starting full time studio work in Lagos in 1995.
Duke Asidere is well-exhibited in Nigeria and abroad, and has participated in and facilitated numerous international and local workshops on painting, photography, and drawing, including Colour Masters (Auchi Polytechnic, 2011), Mood Colour Harmony (Splendens Factory, Paris, 2016) and a number of the annual Harmattan Workshop Series. He is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists.
