Ellis Oyekola
Ellis Oyekola was born in 1954 into a family of Yoruba royal wood carvers’ called Ajibogunde or Ajibona in the western region of Nigeria. He graduated with a B.A degree in Fine Art (Painting) from Ahmadu Bell University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1985; MA Visual Art from University of Ibadan and Ph.D in Art History from Commonwealth Open University in 2013.
He is currently a lecturer of painting and art history in the Department of Art Design and Printing Technology, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Nigeria.
His latest style of painting is called NEO-OYEKOLAFORMS an abstract expressionistic style which is an intuitive representation of curvilinear and rectilinear lines to create complex geometric shapes reminiscent of Traditional African Mural expression. He recently returned from India on a residency programme “Golden Thread†organised by Narrative Movements.
He is the founder and Executive Director of Centre for Afrikan Art and Design, Awotà n, Ibadan; and has exhibited his works in Africa, America and Europe.
