Theorizing Nigerian Indigenous Knowledge Systems

The journey of this new book began in 2021 when I was fed-up with applying the Euro-American theoretical framework in my research studies. So, I started conceptualizing the first of its kind idea of propounding indigenous communication and media theories that resonate with our Nigerian lived realities, and could challenge the Western dominance of theoretical framework. This led me to pioneer a new path in Communication and Media Studies in the Nigerian academy, by championing, developing, authoring and editing the first comprehensive and long-awaited book to systematically propound a distinct set of Nigerian indigenous communication and media theories that authentically root their framework directly in the nation's unique rich cultural traditions and daily lived experiences, that resonate with the Nigerian people, and the neighbouring and distant countries who share Nigeria's cultural heritage.

I must confess, venturing into an almost untouched academic field by formalizing and theorizing indigenous Nigerian communication and media systems, that has eluded Nigerian scholarship for centuries, a feat that demands rare intellectual creativity, courage, and deep cultural insight was herculean. And after nearly five years of dedicated effort, rigorous back-and-forth with the reviewers and publishers, extensive and tiring peer-review process, though lengthy, I am profoundly grateful to God that the first book (Edited volume) on Nigerian indigenous communication and media theories has premiered in the global academic community. It is published by a leading international academic publisher, Palgrave Macmillan, and each article is indexed by Scopus, SciVal, and Web of Science.

Every theory in this publication meets the highest international academic standards and reflects the publisher’s esteem, strict and uncompromised editorial quality.

This publication lays the foundational stones for theorizing indigenous knowledge systems, and indigenous communication and media theories in Nigeria. This work also marks a major shift from Euro-American theoretical dominance to locally grounded intellectual frameworks in African communication and media studies. The groundbreaking work charts a new course and standard for decolonized communication and media scholarship.
