I am very much irritated that the discussion on higher education learning in our social media space has been hijacked by very narrow minded folks, who are good at regurgitating “money making courses”, as though they are the only fabrics of sustaining a modern society.

If you are not studying medicine, Nursing, Law and IT, you are most likely wasting your time in school. And graduates, who earned their degrees from a “reputable university” would go under the comment section to ask:
Sir/ Ma’am, I studied psychology, do you think it’s valuable? Owee gwanu gi n’ obu gi na Odumeje na-azo customers.
We see how US and other European countries are hawking our graduates who studied chemistry, physics, biological sciences, maths and statistics. And we think, oh! they have so much money to throw around.

A society that understands that every scientific breakthrough would most likely come from people who understand these subjects in details, pair intelligence and come up with world class research papers that help progress medicine, aviation, and other spheres of life.
I’m happy at the enormous absorption of our chemical, civil, petrochemical and mechanical engineers by the Dangote refinery. Enough of them doing banking teller jobs. Else we wake up to a miscreant tagging Engineering a useless course, just because we live in a society that has failed to create nor innovate by a quarter, what serious countries achieved in scale hundred years ago.

I will not want to dabble into the bastardisation of Law as a discipline in Nigeria. Globally, Lawyers are amongst the highest earners. And it’s only in Nigeria that over 90-98% of folks who finish their Bachelor’s degree in Law, fight to go to Law school.
Other places, the move immediately to master’s in corporate law, Financial and Tax law, Family law, and not interested in litigations and getting their bar licences.
Na corporations dey rush them. Check PWC, KPMG, Deloitte and EY. After Finance and Accounting guys, folks with law degree are bagging home big cheques there.
But because half of ours turn out to selling panties and bra and wigs online after their marathon legal studies, we would soon tag Law a non profitable course.

If you make me the Minister of Transportation or Minister of Education, over 5000 graduates of psychology or medical psychiatrists would be employed within the first year into civil service. Since we have hundreds of undiagnosed mental health patients on the road, driving and our kids need certified counsellors to guide them at different stages of their formation.
Over 50 years after the Biafran war, we are yet to produce any coherent piece of history that would articulate our struggles on the media - movies and songs. Yet, we berate historians and those in Media and Communication Studies.

When as a society, we are collectively ndi iberibe, who are just on the wings of survival, with no inkling to build a sustainable society, where Unoka the flutist would entertain the nurse who just finished a 10hr shift at UNTH and earn his living from being a musician.
Shaking your bubbles a little- the starting salary of primary school teachers in Luxembourg is about 83,000 euros. Start ooooo! That’s more than what UK medical doctors and nurses make from the start.

Whereas in our own society, our teachers are seen as poster image of what not study in school. And when I tell people that teaching gave me the satisfaction and fulfilment I am not sure to derive working in offices that pay me my monthly salary then, in an hour….they act surprised.

We need an unprecedented industrialisation and to have huge sectors absorb our bright minds, in the same numbers the banking industry is currently doing in Nigeria. If we scale our transportation sectors and enact serious maintenance policies, our mechanical engineers will have a field day.
That will need admins. Folks good with communication. Project managers. Etc.

If we do same with hospitals, our doctors and nurses will not only have a conducive environment to save lives, but we would employ folks with non medical backgrounds to handle some other hospital administrative duties. Shebi our Food Scientists are selling slippers and perfume online , while we are doing trial and error with floating palm oil, and relying on Scott Iguma to do quality control on the water we drink.
