Focus on What You Can Control

Posted by: Benjamin Onuorah

The other day, something happened in one of my businesses. One of my senior team members came to me, visibly concerned. She had been listening to what some customers were saying, and it was bothering her deeply.

She said, “I don’t like what I’m hearing. People are talking, and it’s not exactly in our favor.”

I could see the frustration on her face. She wanted us to do something, anything to change the narrative. But I looked at her and simply said, “I don’t have control over that.”

She was quiet for a moment, probably expecting a different response. So I continued, “It’s a pure waste of energy, time, and resources to dwell on things we cannot control.”

And that’s the truth.
People will always talk. Some will praise you, some will misunderstand you, and some will criticize just because they can. If you spend all your time trying to manage public perception, you will lose focus on the things that actually matter, things like delivering excellent service, building a strong team, and improving your business.

I told her, “Instead of worrying about what people are saying, let’s focus on what we’re doing. Let’s make sure our work speaks louder than any rumor. Let’s keep improving, keep learning, and keep growing.”

Because here’s the thing; you cannot control people’s opinions, but you can control your results.

And guess what? Over time, results always silence unnecessary noise.
So, next time you find yourself stressing over things outside your control, take a step back and ask yourself, Is this where my energy should be going?
Focus on what matters. The rest will take care of itself.
Make sense?

Keep Winning.
